Claude Haiku 5.5 on Bedrock

Claude Haiku 5.5 on Amazon Bedrock

Claude Haiku 5.5 has been available on Amazon Bedrock since its release on October 7, 2026 (AWS announcement (opens in a new tab)). The Bedrock model ID is anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5. Most accounts call it through a cross-Region inference profile such as global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5.

This guide covers which ID to use, what each option costs, the IAM permissions involved and how to connect it to OpenCode. For the model itself, including benchmarks and the 100K price tier, see the Claude Haiku 5.5 guide.

Bedrock model IDs and inference profiles

IDRoutingListed price vs Claude API
global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5Any supported commercial RegionSame
anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5The Region you callSame
us.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5US Regions only1.1×
eu.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5EU Regions only1.1×
jp.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5Japan Regions only1.1×
au.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5Australia Regions only1.1×

The profile prefixes are from the AWS announcement; the prices are from the models.dev (opens in a new tab) catalog that OpenCode uses. AWS sets its own prices and Region list, so confirm both on the Bedrock pricing page (opens in a new tab) before committing to a budget.

Choose global. when you have no data residency requirement; it gives Bedrock the widest capacity to route to. Choose a geographic profile when requests must stay within a jurisdiction, and account for the higher price. AWS GovCloud (US) is also supported according to the announcement.

Prices on Bedrock

USD per million tokens for the global profile. Multiply by 1.1 for us., eu., jp. and au. profiles.

Token typePrompt ≤ 100K tokensPrompt > 100K tokens
Input$0.10$0.50
Output$0.50$2.50
5-minute cache write$0.125$0.625
Cache read$0.01$0.05

As on the Claude API, the tier is chosen per request by the total prompt length, cache reads included. With the us. profile, a request with 20K input and 2K output tokens costs about $0.0033 instead of $0.003. Use AWS Cost Explorer or CloudWatch to compare actual usage against these figures.

Before you configure OpenCode

  1. Enable the model. Open the Bedrock console, go to the model catalog and confirm that Claude Haiku 5.5 is available to your account in the Region you will call.
  2. Grant IAM permissions. The identity OpenCode uses needs bedrock:InvokeModel and bedrock:InvokeModelWithResponseStream. With an inference profile, the policy must allow the profile and the underlying foundation model in the Regions it routes to; see AWS cross-Region inference (opens in a new tab).
  3. Test outside OpenCode. A direct call separates AWS access problems from OpenCode configuration:
aws bedrock-runtime converse \
  --region us-east-1 \
  --model-id global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5 \
  --messages '[{"role":"user","content":[{"text":"Reply with OK"}]}]'

If this fails, fix the AWS side first. Reinstalling OpenCode will not change the result.

Configure Amazon Bedrock in OpenCode

OpenCode's amazon-bedrock provider uses the AWS credential chain. Set credentials in the environment that starts opencode, for example a named profile:

AWS_PROFILE=my-profile AWS_REGION=us-east-1 opencode

A Bedrock API key in AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK, or one stored through /connect, takes precedence over every profile and access key. If a call uses the wrong account, check for a leftover bearer token first. All authentication methods are listed in the Amazon Bedrock provider guide.

To keep the Region, profile and model with the project, add them to opencode.json:

opencode.json
{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "model": "amazon-bedrock/global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5",
  "provider": {
    "amazon-bedrock": {
      "options": {
        "region": "us-east-1",
        "profile": "my-profile"
      }
    }
  }
}

Options in the configuration file take precedence over environment variables. For a VPC endpoint, add endpoint as shown in the Bedrock configuration options. Start OpenCode, run /models and confirm that Claude Haiku 5.5 is listed under Amazon Bedrock before sending a prompt.

Use Haiku 5.5 as the small model

Haiku 5.5 suits lightweight work in a session that uses a larger Bedrock model by default:

opencode.json
{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "model": "amazon-bedrock/global.anthropic.claude-sonnet-5-5",
  "small_model": "amazon-bedrock/global.anthropic.claude-haiku-5-5"
}

Both models must be enabled in your account. Check the Sonnet 5.5 profile ID in /models, since availability differs by account.

Application inference profiles

If your organization tracks cost with an application inference profile, use a readable key and put the profile ARN in id. This keeps prompt caching working correctly:

opencode.json
{
  "$schema": "https://opencode.ai/config.json",
  "provider": {
    "amazon-bedrock": {
      "models": {
        "claude-haiku-5-5-team": {
          "id": "arn:aws:bedrock:us-east-1:111122223333:application-inference-profile/abc123"
        }
      }
    }
  }
}

Replace the account number and profile ID with your own values.

Troubleshooting

SymptomCheck
AccessDeniedExceptionIAM permissions for the profile and the underlying model in each routed Region, and that the model is enabled
ValidationException about on-demand throughputCall an inference profile ID (global. or a geographic prefix) instead of the base ID
Model missing from /modelsUpdate OpenCode, then check that your Region and account have access
Requests go to an unexpected accountA bearer token overrides profiles; unset AWS_BEARER_TOKEN_BEDROCK or remove the /connect credential
ThrottlingExceptionBedrock quotas for the Region and profile; the global. profile can route to more Regions

For general authentication and quota problems, see the model connection checklist.

Bedrock or the Claude API?

Bedrock fits when your organization already bills, audits and controls access through AWS, or needs IAM, VPC endpoints and Region-level data controls. The Claude API is simpler for an individual developer: one API key and the same base prices, without IAM or Region setup. In OpenCode, switching between them only changes the provider prefix and credentials; the Haiku 5.5 guide lists both IDs, and Claude models in OpenCode covers the rest of the Claude lineup.
